Roberto Dallo - Making of 'BACK TO THE PRESENT'
Check the making of ‘BACK TO THE PRESENT-collection’ of Roberto Dallo and see the images in BarberSociety magazine, the Summer 2021 issue (published in July).
Future is based on our past and our essence, what we are, is dressed up with all these details. But what are we? We are the present, with a mixture of longings with which we look at the future and all the experience that the lived identity offers us.
Back to the present is inspired by the Baroque, the climax of our culture and our way of being, but it does not recreate it, but brings new nuances of colour and haircut to it, it updates it, because we will no longer be what we were nor will we be what we are. We are only certainty, present.
Back to the present
Past and present, futures with a taste of eternity, records that are timeless and almost intact, that ‘’re-generate’’ history and endow it with a new, renewed and different character. The word remember comes from Latin "recordari" formed by the prefix "re" which means "again" and "cordis", "heart". Remembering, therefore, means much more than having something or someone present in memory, it means "getting back to the heart" with all that that implies. Beating with a past but current awareness, weakening the distance imposed by time to lead to a contemporary aesthetic with a unique flavour that only experience can provide.
We are only a certainty, present, an essence that transforms.

Gema Moreno - Making of 'INVICTA'
Check the making of ‘INVICTA-collection’ of Gema Moreno, Finalist Best Men's Collection (2021) Picasso Awards – Andalusian Hairdressing Awards and see the images in BarberSociety magazine, the Summer 2021 issue (published in July).
This collection is inspired by the poem "Invictus", written by the English poet William Ernest Henley and is a great motivation to face life in the face of difficulties. In all the looks there is a positive, resilient look from those who in the face of adversity have grown up, despite suffering, re-emerging victorious. Quite a phoenix attitude that translates into simple, yet luxurious haircuts and textures. This strength is reflected in mullets and short hairstyles with fringes that highlight the eyes, with a shine that fills the image with light, as well as long manes that explore their strength with waves.

Kings Barbers - Wij zijn de Kings
To provide some comic relief to their loyal customers during the hard and hairy times, Pascal van Lith of Kings Barbers (NL) recorded this song (in Dutch) in April 2020.

SNEAK PEEK FALL ISSUE...EDITORIAL BarberSociety founder Marc van de Hare
I hope you are all doing well. Hopefully, you’ve been able to start cutting hair again and are supporting each other during these uncertain times. Since I can’t attend any barber events during this period, I’m so happy I can use the phone and the online channels to keep in touch with my colleagues and stay up to date on the global trends and developments in our profession.
I began noticing a while back that barbers are increasingly using men’s hair colouring, both pastel and platinum tints and bold and striking colours. It’s one way we can give men a dash of colour during this ‘grey’ period. Colouring is also a great means for our clients to express their individuality. Autumn always heralds the kick-off of the new fashion season. So it’s the perfect time for a colour special. Therefore, this themed edition showcases the latest trends in men’s hair colouring and colouring products.
Hair colouring artists
We’ve got some incredible hair colouring artists within the barbering community. I’m proud that we’ve been able to give some of these artists the chance to be on stage at BarberSociety Live in previous years. One of them is award-winning Irish barber Paul Mac, who’s been called the David Bowie of barbering, and American barber Julius Cvesar. I’m always hugely impressed when I spot pictures of their hair creations on Instagram. So I’m delighted that we’ve interviewed them for this edition to find out more about their creative drive. Be sure to read their inspiring stories of their journeys in barbering. The key message: Stay true to yourself, create your own opportunities and persevere. I couldn’t agree more!
“Stay true to yourself, create your own opportunities and persevere”
Grooming in Indonesia
Hair artist Yudhekk from Jakarta has also racked up a massive number of followers thanks to his bold colourful hair artistry. I’ve been following him on Instagram for a while now, so I was thrilled to get the chance to meet him in person in Jakarta last year. It was nice of him to make a long journey through Java for our meeting. You’re sure to see and hear more about him as he takes the world by storm. We’re pleased to share a sampling of his fantastic creations in our colour trend pages. Also check out all the other hair colour creations we’ve received from barbers around the world. They’re super inspiring! So I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to this edition. It’s amazing to see how barbers from the Netherlands to Australia and everywhere in between are working with colour.
Indonesia’s strong grooming culture is also highlighted in our ‘Barbers & the City’ section that places Jakarta in the spotlight. Last year, Oky and Fatsi, two pioneers in the field of barbering in Indonesia, took me on a tour of different barbershops in the country. It was a real privilege to visit some of the island’s amazing barbershops and meet such talented barbers!
Developments worldwide
This edition has an international flavour and provides a good picture of global developments in our fantastic industry. Be inspired by the moving stories of Spanish barber babe Eva Suárez, who shares her ambition to pursue lifetime learning, UK barber Anthony Komodikis on three generations of barbers, and Jim Shaw, owner of Toni&Guy Billericay, UK, on his trend predictions for the future.
Want to save a life too?
With Movember just around the corner, I would like to draw special attention to ‘The Lions Barber Collective’. It’s an excellent initiative from well-known British barber Tom Chapman. Many barbers have already joined this collective and as a result are genuinely saving lives. Like to find out more? Read more in BarberSociety magazine, take the free training course and become a ‘lion’.

Grooming in Indonesië

The world grinds to a temporary halt ...Editorial BarberSociety founder Marc van de Hare
The world grinds to a temporary halt
The world looked very different when we began developing the content for this spring edition. Coronavirus was still far away from the Netherlands in a distant country. The past few weeks have demonstrated how rapidly the world can change. I’m writing this column at the last minute just before this edition goes to press. Here in the Netherlands, the government just announced an ‘intelligent lockdown’, which also requires hairdressers and barber shops to close if they had not already done so. The ban on events has also been extended to June 1st. In the meantime, it is even extended to September 1st. This means our 5th anniversary edition of BarberSociety Live, which we’ve been preparing for many months, will not be able to go ahead. The pain of having to cancel the event pales in comparison to the tragedy of the situation and the victims of this invisible killer.
Now that the barber shop is closed, it feels to me like the world has temporarily ground to a halt. But I hope that ‘temporary’ really does mean ‘temporary’. It feels as if we’ve all ended up in a bad horror movie that I’d like to fast forward as quickly as possible. The pandemic is impacting everyone around the world, including all of us working in our outstanding sector.
We’re all in this tough situation together and what touches me and gives me hope are the great initiatives being developed by both brands in our industry and among barbers themselves to support our sector. The sense of solidarity and comradery that’s always existed among barbers, has become greater than ever. We phone each other, support one another and give each other tips on how to navigate the financial challenges. The barbering community is also brimming with ideas for how we can encourage and inspire each other and stay in contact with our clients during these trying times. It seems like this situation has made us even more connected. It’s a time of reflection that is bringing us together like never before.
“There’s a greater sense of solidarity than ever”
Even though it seems like my world is very small right now as I am writing this in my home in Amsterdam, in reality the world is opened up through all the social channels. This connectedness transcends all borders even though I’m not allowed to physically cross borders. And through our magazine we’re also bringing the world closer. This edition focuses on Amsterdam – the city that hosts BarberSociety Live.
In the Barbers & the City section, we show a selection of Amsterdam barber shops, which naturally includes my own barber shop Van de Hare Amsterdam Barbers. Our Barbers & Denim lifestyle special in this edition highlights Amsterdam’s role as the denim capital of Europe, with the compelling story of Amsterdam jeans brand Amsterdenim and an interview with top barber and denim influencer Morteza Talebi. And in the ‘All in the family’ section, we’re spotlighting my own father – Wout van de Hare - whose father (my grandfather) opened a barber shop in Amsterdam in 1934.
If you’re thinking of spending this lockdown redecorating your barber shop, be sure to read the interview with interior designer Guy Sarlemijn. You might also have time to work on your own profile so you can expand your clientele when your barber shop reopens. Chris Foster provides some very useful tips on how to optimise your profile in his column. Romanian Barber Babe Mihaela Stelniceanu emphasises the importance of education and continued personal and professional development. The online channels offer a world of possibilities for this, and new initiatives are being launched every day during this crisis.
Also be sure to read the inspiring story of BarberSociety Live sponsor Red Deer and learn about all the latest products in the product news section. In a feature interview, Sheldon Edwards, whose clients include elite athletes Usain Bolt and Raheem Sterling, gives us an inside glimpse of his life as a barber to the stars. We’re also happy to showcase work from homegrown Dutch stars in the Trend pages. This includes work from Luke Blom, the Dutch winner of the American Crew All-Star Challenge 2020 and a barber on our team at Van de Hare Amsterdam Barbers. I’m naturally as proud as can be of Luke’s victory!
I hope the spring edition will provide you with a welcome distraction during these tough times and will be a source of inspiration when the crisis is over and we can start getting back to normal life.
This great profession will certainly bring us together again in the future. Let’s all join forces to make next year’s edition of BSL bigger, better and more inspiring than ever! And I expect the level of the participants in our battles to be higher than ever before after having a whole year to practice and perfect their creations down to the last detail! Be sure to also check out the Amsterdam barbers’ tips for hotspots in Amsterdam ahead of your visit to BSL 2021 for an extra cool weekend in Amsterdam. Because sooner or later we will once again be able to travel to our favourite cities and countries and meet up for world-class events. Once this crisis has been conquered, we’ll all work together to move forward from success to success.
I wish you all good health – take care and stay healthy. We’re one big barber family and together we’ll get through this!
